Windschitl voted against tax relief for this district

The SILO bill, signed by Governor Culver, redistributes taxes in the state.  Property taxes are reduced, and the state sales tax is increased by a penny with all of the increase going to fund schools.  The effect of the revenue-neutral law will be to greatly increase school funding in some areas of the state, notably this area.  So you might think this area’s state representative, Republican Matt Windschitl, would have voted for the bill.  You might think that, but you’d be wrong:  Windschitl voted against the bill.  Here’s part of what the Logan Herald-Observer had to say about it:

In the Logan-Magnolia district, property taxes ill be reduced by over $700,000 and the district stands to gain over $580.000 in revenue.  In Woodbine, the revenue gain for schools will be over $380,000.

For some reason, those numbers seem to get caught in the throat of Windschitl and his Iowans for Tax Relief buddies.

They follow the talking points line by line and do not veer away from the script, no matter how much this may improve the lives of our students and teachers.

And very good buddies they are.  Iowans for Tax Relief, a Muscatine, Iowa anti-tax group, and Taxpayers United, an anti-tax group working out of the same P.O. box, gave Matt Windschitl more than half of his campaign dollars in 2006.  It’s too bad the people of the district don’t command the same kind of loyalty from the incumbent.
